We believe that the development literature leaves a gap. Post-secondary education has the potential to take a woman living under a school in Phnom Penh, to a position with international agencies (this is a true story). Post-secondary education is transformative.
The question arises as to how many women a female lawyer might touch over her professional lifetime? Every female student that CLEW educates has the potential to promote women's rights throughout Cambodia over their professional lifetimes.
As a result, our efforts overseas are concentrated on providing post-secondary education for women in Cambodia to help transform their lives, those of their families and those of women throughout Cambodia for many years to come.
Our educational programs are designed to support female law students in Cambodia. Development literature stresses the importance of educating women because any increase in income will benefit the family and the community. The problem in different areas of the world, particularly Southeast Asia, is that if one supports the education of men in preference to women, the resulting wealth is dissipated in many ways. Development literature states that the education of women is necessary through primary and secondary school suggesting that funding women at these stages of education is preferred to supporting post-secondaryeducation.
